International Document Freedom Day is a flexible day of action that always falls on the last Wednesday of March (30 March 2022). But much indicates that this calendar decision is a reference to the first edition of the DFD.
May 3 serves as a reminder to governments to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a reflection day among media professionals on issues of press freedom and professional ethics. Just as importantly, World Press Freedom Day (WPD) is a day of support for the media, which are targeted to restrict or abolish press freedom. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who gave their lives in the pursuit of history.
Document Freedom Day (DFD) is an international day to celebrate and raise awareness of open standards. On this day, people gather to hold local events and inform the public about freedom of access to information.
Join by attending an event near you, help spread the word, or look for other ways to get involved. Seeking gender balance in media leadership and ownership positions is critical for independent journalism to serve the public interest by fulfilling its function of gathering and sharing information in society. Lack of gender balance in media leadership leads to blind spots, one-sided coverage and gender stereotypes. Unfortunately, women often do not hold leadership positions and their access to leadership roles remains limited. It leaves women voices unheard, their stories untold, and they can not break the glass ceiling.
