On May 11, 1998, India broke into a small group of countries with nuclear weapons. On that day, India successfully conducted nuclear tests at the Pokhran army test site in Rajasthan. At the same time, India became the sixth country to join the Nuclear Club. The tests were directed by the late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, an aerospace scientist who later became the eleventh President of India. The test was the second nuclear test in India after the first, codenamed Smiling Buddha, in 1974. On the same day in 1998, India tested its first domestic Hansa-3 aircraft, which took off in Bangalore. The aircraft was intended for surveillance, pilot training and other reconnaissance purposes. On the same day, successful test firing of the Trishul anti-aircraft missile took place. Since several technological achievements were made on the same day, the Government of India has declared May 11 as National Technology Day. It was officially signed by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The first World Day of Technology for the Future was celebrated in 1999. Since then, the TDB Technology Development Board - an official body of the Center Department of Science and Technology has commemorated the day by celebrating technological innovations that have contributed to national growth. Each year, the Council organizes an event where the President of India presents awards to scientists for their contributions. Various seminars and master classes are also held. The Council also determines the theme for National Technology Day each year. The theme for 2022 is an integrated approach in science and technology for a sustainable future.
